Recently the German Research Foundation (DFG) has established a priority programme SPP 1473, WeNDeLIB, which aims at designing new electrode materials and electrolytes for improved lithium ion batteries (LIB). More than thirty research groups will collaborate for the next six years in an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the relationship of materials properties, electrochemistry and thermodynamics of new lithium ion batteries. The materials will be combined for establishing advanced cathodes, anodes, electrolytes and complete cells. The performance of cells, batteries and battery packs will be investigated by experiments and computer calculations taking into account thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. Intercalation compounds for cathodes with layered oxides, spinel and olivine structures, respectively, will be taken into account. Additionally, more advanced concepts such as conversion electrodes and lithium sulfur batteries are on the research list. Fundamental contributions are expected for the production of LIB with significantly improved energy densitiy, power density, cycle lifetime, temperature performance, capacity and safety. This presentation will provide an overview on selected scientific topics in lithium ion battery research and related research strategies of SPP 1473.
